Berny TAN

Curatorial & Research Residency || 01 Nov 2022 to 31 Jan 2023

Berny Tan is an artist, curator, and writer. Her interdisciplinary practice explores the tensions that arise when one applies systems to—and unearths systems in—intangible personal experiences, complicating the false binary between rational and emotional. Her strategies as a practitioner also reflect a fundamental interest in language as it is read, written, and spoken by her. As an extension of a recent curatorial project, Tan is intrigued by the individual sensibilities of artists who work with everyday objects, and the personal affinities they develop with the objects they choose to use in their work. She believes that this is worth deeper, extended study and historicisation within the context of Singapore art, and would use the residency as a dedicated period for further research into relevant concepts and artworks—including, if possible, some form of access to the museum’s collection and archives.
