In Copycat: A Mimeograph Workshop, Artist-Resident Bruno Ruiz introduced participants to the mimeograph machine – an old school duplicator that uses ink and stencil paper to create copies of any image fed into it. Over the two-day workshop, Bruno took participants through the steps of the mimeograph printing process, working together to create a collaborative zine from start to finish.

Participants discovered the forgotten mimeograph and its history as a publishing tool used by small organisations, schools and offices, as well as its ongoing revival as a tool for editorial experimentation and collective work methods.

Day 1 – 18th May 2024 (Saturday), 1:00 – 3:00PM
1. History of the Mimeograph Machine:
A brief look at the history of the use of mimeograph printing and its use by avant garde groups in Mexico today.
2. Content drafting and editing
Participants worked together as a team to decide on the theme and direction of the zine, and were taken through the process of planning, laying out and drafting content.
3. Writing/Illustration
Participants were assigned 2 pages each, which they can decide if they wish to fill with illustrations, poems or other text-based materials. During this time, they were also able to draft their pages.


Day 2 – 19th May 2024 (Sunday), 1:00 – 3:00PM
4. Printing with the Mimeograph
Participants were introduced to the techniques needed to transfer their drafts onto stencil paper, after which they used the mimeograph machine to produce the final pages for the zine.
5. Simple Book Binding (Saddlestitch)
As a final step, all the work is put together in a simple binding process.
