Pasar in the Afternoon with Chu Hao Pei and SayurStory
How, and what do we gather to make nasi goreng? Join artist Chu Hao Pei and community group SayurStory to explore the diversity of nasi goreng recipes and communities in our neighbourhood.
Through the experience of sourcing ingredients fresh from Geylang Serai wet market in the afternoon, you are invited to rediscover a new relationship with the market and exchanges around it. This programme is inspired by the artwork, Nasi Goreng Diplomacy #3, drawing from SayurStory’s relationships with the artist and the neighbourhood.
This programme is held in conjunction with the exhibition, SAM Contemporaries: How to Dream Worlds.
About SayurStory
SayurStory is a ground-up initiative that explores community-building with migrant domestic workers in Singapore through food and nature. In their ongoing residency at the Geylang East Public Library, they are reimagining spaces and communities of learning with partners in the neighbourhood, extending and deepening their roots in the east as a community partner of NHB’s Katong-Joo Chiat Heritage Activation Node (HAN).
Since 2021, the community has been frequenting Geylang Serai Market to explore and reconnect with their roots. With ingredients and friends from around the neighbourhood, SayurStory has hosted a series of cooking engagements in Kim Choo Kueh Chang where they set up pop-up community kitchens on Sundays.
